In October, 2024, The Cove was one of countless Tampa Bay communities to suffer damage from Hurricane Milton. The gated community access control system was greatly affected for this Tampa community. All eight of the property’s gate operators were under water during the storm, including the entry and exit gates at the main and resident entrances. The photocells were also submerged, which emit light beams that serve as a safety mechanism to avoid gate closure when a pedestrian is present. The Cove partnered with Tampa-based Surveillance Technology, Inc. (STI) to replace the damaged equipment.
This bayfront neighborhood is a boat lover’s dream, offering direct boat access with community and individual docks. But storm season brings elevated risk for waterfront communities. To mitigate the threat of future damage, in addition to replacing the damaged Viking gate operators and Omron photocells, STI manufactured and installed steel pedestals to raise the equipment above levels seen during Milton. All call box electronics were likewise raised, so the power source and electronics would remain above potential future surge.
Hurricanes Helene and Milton caused residents and organizations across Tampa Bay and all of Florida to think differently about storm hazards. Perhaps now is the time to consider steps you can take today to protect your property for storms to come.
